Geometrical and fluidic tuning of periodically modulated thin metal films

We numerically demonstrate near-zero transmission of light through two-dimensional arrays of isolated gold rings. The analysis of the device as an optofluidic sensor is presented to demonstrate the tuning of the device in relation to variations of volume and refractive index of an isotropic fluid positioned over the structure. We also evaluate the performance of the device with respect to geometrical parameters of the rings.     

Mechanism insights into an unexpected isomerisation reaction observed during conversion of N-benzyl piperazinones to corresponding N-benzyl thio-piperazinones

An interesting and surprising rearrangement was observed during the reaction of 4-N-benzyl piperazinone derivatives with Lawesson’s reagent as a thionating agent. Investigation into the possible mechanism responsible for these results is reported herein.     

Work function and negative electron affinity of ultrathin barium fluoride films

Thin films of barium fluorides with different thicknesses were deposited on GaAs substrate by electron beam evaporation. The aim of the work was to identify the best growth conditions for the production of coatings with a low work function suitable for the anode of hybrid thermionic-photovoltaic (TIPV) devices. The chemical composition and work function φ of the films with different thicknesses were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS). The lowest value of φ = 2.1 eV was obtained for the film with a thickness of ~2 nm. In the valence band spectra of the films at low kinetic energy, near the cutoff, a characteristic peak of negative electron affinity was present. This effect contributed to a further reduction of the film's work function.     

Snapshot location for POD in control of a linear heat equation

In the present work, we study the approximation of a distributed optimal control problem for a linear heat equation with model order reduction based on Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD-MOR). We show that snapshot location for control problems is crucial in model reduction. For the determination of the time instances (snapshot locations) we utilize an a-posteriori error control concept which is based on a reformulation of the optimality system of the underlying optimal control problem as a second order in time and fourth order in space elliptic system.
